Afterword: Saving Throws

Gilsdorf searches for Tolkien manuscripts, finds out they are nearby at Marquette University where there are tons of other documents from Tolkien. Later, he meets a man named Matt Blessing who allows him to search through these documents and take out whichever documents he desires. He finally has a revelation that this is where he was supposed to end up all along. He realizes that he has a rough childhood, as do many people, but that is just a part of his life that led him to that point in time.

He then goes home and goes through his blue cooler to read through articles of when he was a child. He realizes his wrongs in replacing his mother with his games. He recalls a “saving throw” that could save a character from toxin, and how his mother could not withstand her disease. For years he had used this game to justify his real world mother, yet he now realizes that her death was no game.

He realizes that he will always have gaming be a part of him, and he may always struggle with reality, but sees the rest of his life as a second chance where he can focus on reality a bit more. He later accepts that he wants to focus on reality by changing his relationship. He goes for a walk with his girlfriend with no destination, but sees a new real relationship ahead.
