Ethan’s
final two days in Middle-earth are markedly more successful than the rest of
his trip. He meets calligrapher Daniel Reeve who shows him maps of
Middle-earth and books of Elvish script he had created for the trilogy. He
also meets Gino Acevedo, the head to Weta Workshop’s prosthetics and makeup
department.
He is
able to get a behind the scenes tour of the offices and see a Gollum model and
other prosthetics used in the films. As he is peering through a case of
Oscars, Ethan sees Richard Taylor and without even thinking says “Hi” to him
and manages to say “Bye.” Ethan thinks back to when he was acting out the “Get
off the road scene” and explains that he didn’t want to act as any of the
characters, he wanted total immersion – to be a part of story.
On
Mount Victoria, Ethan digs a hole and buries the figurines he brought with him,
as directed by a voice he hears. He notes that the trip had “demystified the
power of Middle-earth” and now he has left his childish things behind him.
